Exploring the Secrets of the Veiled World

A grey silver screen like the old movies, such as one would see in silent movies. The text on it reads "What is the Veiled World? And where does it come from?"

Simply put, The Veiled World is a world full of all of your favorite supernatural creatures. Vampires, Werewolves, Witches and Fae (sort of) populate the Veiled World. And all of it is secret.

So What is the Veiled world?

The Veiled World is the term that is used to describe the Supernatural World that is hidden within our own universe. Kept secret, ‘Veiled’ from the non-magical society, the Veiled World houses and keeps safe all kinds of magical creatures and people, as well as the very concept of magic itself. In a world that experienced centuries of witch hunts and religious persecution of the mere concept of magic, it was deemed safer to hide those who may be at threat if the non-magical world found out about them. Everyone was safer if they remained Veiled.

In Briton, the magical world is also known as the Knowing World, ie, those who know about or are part of magic. You can probably guess what the non-magical world is called (it’s the Unknowing or Unveiled world if you hadn’t guessed).

Common Slang for the Unveiled/Unknowing is ‘Unis,’ which when used by certain types of people is also a description of the ‘narrow’ or ‘simpleminded’ views of those who do not live in the Veiled world.

Who lives there?

Witches

There are three main species in the Veiled World. Witches are considered by many to be as old as time itself. Magic being an inherent part of the world, it makes sense to scholars that some humans have always had the ability to harness the inherent magic of the universe. Witches have magic flowing through their veins. Whilst it is possible for anyone to learn how to make a potion or draw a runic circle, Witches can cast spells, channel the magic of rituals and conjure things from either.

Werewolves

No-one knows when werewolves evolved into being. They are old enough to be found in the cave paintings of all indigenous cultures. Werewolves can be created in two ways. Either they can be born to at least one werewolf parent, or they can become a werewolf by being bitten.

Werewolves have the ability to turn into a large wolf at will (provided they have enough control over their Shift.) They can also Shift by accident if their emotions get the better of them, as Shifting is governed by emotions.

Vampires

Like werewolves and witches, vampires have been around for most if not all written history. One can find mentions of immortals who stalk the night and shadows in even the oldest of written texts. No-one knows when or how vampires were created, or if they evolved on their own as no vampires were currently living date back that far, and the knowledge has been lost. Immortality is given in exchange for the consumption of live human blood. Hypersensitivity to sunlight has historically made them creatures of night and shadow in order to avoid severe burns and sunstroke that do not heal as quickly as other injuries sustained by them.

In the Modern Day

In the modern day vampires, witches and wolves live in relative harmony with each other. Modern laws prevent (to the greatest extent that they can) discrimination against any one race, trying to heal the old world’s wounds – such as the historic prejudice faced by werewolves, and fear of vampires.

Whilst fae creatures like sirens, sphynx and psions used to walk freely in our world, The Great Migration saw them flee this plane back to the Fae Realm over two thousand years ago. Though no full blooded fae creatures still walk this realm their presence can still be felt every now and again when fae blood resurges in a family line. Fae-blooded people have a wide range of extra abilities or difficulties and are considered to be gifted by most of the magical world. Though this can cause frustration in the fae-blooded community as people often do not understand that those gifts always come with a downside. Magic always comes with a price, after all.

So, where did this all come from?

In short, the brains of myself and my wife. With both of us being writers, including RPing with one another, we wanted a world of magic and wonder, but one that was darker and grittier than most ‘magic’ worlds. As a mega fan of all things gothic I wanted to include aspects of old school gothic horror and classic monster lore.
